PRIMA Woman Greening Food Systems Award in the Mediterranean

Marta Cortegano was one of four recipients of the PRIMA Woman Greening Food Systems Award, with the project “BLOOM – Building Lives of Optimism and Opportunities for Women in the Semi-arid Through Regeneration”.  Marta and her team They drive a community process that has care as its core value: care for the soil, for people, and for the future, embracing the sustainability of the agri-food system as the basis for the biophysical and socioeconomic regeneration of the territory.Photograph of researcher Marta Cortegano with her team

Co-founder of the Terra Sintrópica Association, she leads the fight against desertification in the semi-arid region of Mértola in Portugal—one of the most depopulated regions in Europe—helping to restore the region while empowering local communities through innovative agroecological practices.

Portugal participates in the Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area (PRIMA) through the Foundation for Science and Technology.
