Portuguese researchers can now access the new European quantum computers
Portuguese researchers can now apply to participate in the pilot phase for access to EuroHPC’s new quantum computers. This initiative, launched by the EuroHPC JU, marks a milestone for science and innovation in Europe, as it opens up, for the first time, the possibility for researchers, public entities, and companies to access Europe’s quantum computing infrastructure, following a model similar to that already in place for European supercomputers. The goal is to promote experimentation, application development, and the preparation of the scientific and technological community for the next generation of computational capabilities.
The application evaluation process will take place on a monthly basis, with the first submission deadline set for August 1, 2026. Applications must be submitted through the EuroHPC platform.
The launch of this pilot phase is part of the EuroHPC JU’s strategy to integrate quantum computing into Europe’s supercomputing infrastructure. This approach combines the potential of both technologies, offering users the opportunity to test, validate, and scale applications across different quantum platforms. EuroHPC plans to expand this offering soon by making new quantum computers available.
The initial access provides four quantum systems with different technologies, allowing users to explore different approaches and use cases:
- Euro-Q-Exa, based on superconducting qubits;
- Lucy, focusing on photonic qubits;
- Piast-Q: trapped ions;
- VLQ, based on superconducting qubits.
This pilot phase was designed to provide rapid access to quantum infrastructure, particularly for testing, experimentation, and development activities. Applicants will be able to use the systems to collect performance data, validate methods, or demonstrate the feasibility of applications in specific quantum technologies.
Projects focused on the development of code and workflows, the creation of quantum algorithms, and training and capacity-building activities in the field of quantum computing are also eligible.
