25 years of the MCTES and 200 years of the Thalia Theater

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the creation of the Ministry of Science and Technology (MCTES). The official commemorations will take place on June 17 at the Thalia Theater, a monument that is 200 years old and whose date will also be marked at the event.

The commemorations begin at 3pm, with the "Iberian Research and Innovation Initiatives" session, which will consist of the presentation of the program to strengthen cooperation between the La Caixa Foundation (FLC) and the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), with the MCTES.

At 5 PM the conference "Music, Science, and Art: about Vincenzo Galilei - for the 500th anniversary of Galileo Galilei's father" will begin, and will be given by Professor Manuel Pedro Ferreira, from the New University of Lisbon.

The program will end with an Opera Gala, curated by Filipe Pinto-Ribeiro, which includes two great names in world opera, Russian soprano Anna Samuil and Mexican baritone Alfredo Daza. Both are soloists from the Berlin State Opera, the famous Staatsoper Unter den Linden which, since 1992, has been conducted by maestro Daniel Barenboim. In this gala they will be accompanied by pianist Mathias Samuil and will perform famous arias by some of the greatest composers of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries, such as Mozart, Donizetti, Gounod, Dvorák, and Verdi.

The celebrations will be attended by the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Manuel Heitor, and the Minister of Culture, Graça Fonseca.

In the context of health and public health guidelines in force, the capacity of the Thalia Theater is limited to about 80 people, so the participation in the event is restricted to prior registration to the following email: mjose@mctes.gov.pt

The initiative will be broadcast online via Zoom(link) and Videocast(link). Program available here.
