3rd edition of Call of projects for Forest Fire Research

FCT has opened the applications for the 3rd edition of Call for Scientific Research and Technological Development Projects within the scope of Forest Fire Prevention and Fighting. Applications can be submitted until February 20th, 2020.

This Call aims to promote scientific research and innovation, strengthen scientific and technical skills, as well as the production of new knowledge, and in this edition the following themes and areas will be prioritized:

  • Forest resource governance, including fuels management in rural areas, fire risk integration and communication mechanisms as well as consideration of attitudes and behaviors;
  • Valorization of biomass in rural areas, as a factor to boost the local economy and the participation of the population;
  • Organization and management models for forest areas in the areas of protection, conservation, silvopastoralism, recreation, leisure and production, integrating the territorial, social and economic components;
  • Planning models and preventive forestry and restoration and post-fire management, at different temporal and spatial scales.

The Call has foreseen a financial envelope of 5 million Euros, with a maximum funding limit of 300 thousand Euros per project.

In the first two editions of Call, held in 2017 and 2018, 37 research projects were funded in various scientific areas, for a total amount of 10 million euros. The projects were presented at the meeting "Rural fires: Better management based on scientific evidence", held on November 27, in a joint organization between FCT, ForestWISE - Collaborative Laboratory for Integrated Forest and Fire Management and the Agency for Integrated Management of Rural Fires (AGIF), and are gathered in a brochure produced by FCT.
