Arquivo.pt: New ways to travel to the past
On November 8, Arquivo.pt celebrates its 10th anniversary with the initiative "Arquivo.pt: New ways of traveling to the past". The event marks the work done by this archive in the area of preserving web information, which in the future will allow society to understand what the past was like in this increasingly digital and multimedia age.
The event's program includes sessions where it will be possible to explore the history of the service and learn about the various experiences that these ten years have brought to the work of preserving Portugal's digital heritage. Speakers include José Pacheco Pereira, historian, and Lulien Masanès, from the Internet Memory Foundation. There will also be various workshops and the announcement of the launch of the 2018 Arquivo.pt award.
Arquivo.pt is an infrastructure for searching and accessing websites that have been archived since 1996. It currently has more than 52 million files related to Research & Development (R&D) projects, as well as websites from a wide range of areas. The main focus is the preservation of all information published on the internet for scientific and academic purposes. To this end, a feature has been developed to automatically identify addresses related to R&D projects, which ensures that their content is preserved systematically. The platform also has a field for collecting contributions from researchers, who can suggest the addresses of their sites to be preserved on the platform (see: http://arquivo.pt/sugerir).
