Arquivo.pt: New ways to travel back in time

On November 8, Arquivo.pt celebrates its 10th anniversary with the initiative “Arquivo.pt: New ways of traveling to the past.” The event highlights the work carried out by this archive in the area of web information preservation, which in the future will allow society to understand what the past was like in this increasingly digital and multimedia age.

The event program includes sessions where participants can explore the history of the service and learn about the various experiences that these ten years have brought to the work of preserving Portuguese digital heritage. Among the speakers, José Pacheco Pereira, historian, and Lulien Masanès, from the Internet Memory Foundation, stand out. There will also be several workshops and the launch of the Arquivo.pt 2018 award will be announced.

Arquivo.pt is an infrastructure that allows users to search and access web pages archived since 1996. It currently has more than 52 million files related to Research & Development (R&D) projects, in addition to websites from a wide range of areas. Its main focus is the preservation of all information published on the internet for scientific and academic purposes. To this end, a feature has been developed to automatically identify addresses related to R&D projects, ensuring that their content is systematically preserved. The platform also has a field for collecting contributions from researchers, who can suggest the addresses of their sites to be preserved on the platform (see: http://arquivo.pt/sugerir).
