EMSO-PT and the importance of underwater observatories
The national research infrastructure "European Multidisciplinary Seabed and Water Column Observatory – Portugal" (EMSO-PT) is a research infrastructure that provides access to a wide range of services related to seabed observation, including long-term data series, field operations support, advanced technical training, and seabed exploration consulting.
This infrastructure will also provide the scientific community with access to deep-sea experiments, specific ocean instruments, laboratories, and deep-sea collections. EMSO-PT is made up of members from R&D institutions, developing advanced instrumentation and technology in line with national and European priorities, and is Portugal's national node in the European research infrastructure EMSO ERIC.
EMSO-PT has been part of the National Roadmap for Research Infrastructures of Strategic Interest (RNIE)since 2014 and is funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
This video presents a water column profiler operated by CCMAR – Center for Marine Sciences, and a deep-sea observatory called EGIM – EMSO Generic Instrument Module.
