ERC awards five Starting Grants for Portugal

Institutions and research centers in Aveiro, Coimbra, Porto and Lisbon will host, for the next five years, five of the scientists distinguished in 2013 with Starting Grants from the European Research Council (ERC). Four Portuguese and one Czech now join the 18 researchers developing research in Portugal already distinguished with this award since 2007.

With the ERC's stamp of excellence, the projects by Marta Moita, from the Champalimaud Foundation, Mara Guadalupe, from the University of Aveiro, Ana Cristina Santos, from the Center for Social Studies at the University of Coimbra, Carla Fernandes, from the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences at the New University of Lisbon, and Reto Gassman, from the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of Porto, each receive funding of between 1.3 and 1.4 million euros.

Besides the five researchers working in Portuguese institutions, the project of a Portuguese researcher working abroad was also recognized: Nuno Raimundo, from the University of Goettingen, in Germany.
