FCT launches 2nd edition of Call of Advanced Computing Projects

The Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), through its unit FCCN, announces the opening of the 2nd edition of Call of Advanced Computing Projects, which aims to consolidate and strengthen the national technological and scientific system through Advanced Computing resources for Research and Innovation. Call is a collaboration between the four operational centers - Minho Advanced Computing Centre (MACC), the Advanced Computing Laboratory of Coimbra University (LCA-UC), High Performance Computing of Évora University (HPC-UÉ) and the National Distributed Computing Infrastructure (INCD) - and applications open on July 19th.

FCT, in collaboration with the four operational centers - Minho Advanced Computing Centre (MACC), Laboratory for Advanced Computing of the University of Coimbra (LCA-UC), High Performance Computing of the University of Évora (HPC-UÉ) and the National Infrastructure for Distributed Computing (INCD) - announces the opening of the 2nd edition of this Call for the attribution of Advanced Computing Projects and availability of computing resources.

The aim of Call is to encourage the use of HPC and Scientific Cloud computing resources to obtain new knowledge that will enable scientific and technological advances in all areas of knowledge. These resources may be useful for simulations in areas as distinct as climate or molecular modeling, artificial intelligence and the study of complex problems in the creation of new materials or the improvement of industrial production lines.

In this second Call, which aims at the attribution of 31 million CPU core.hours or vCPU.hours in platforms of the National Network for Advanced Computing (RNCA), applications will be accepted in all scientific areas using High Performance Computing (HPC) and/or Scientific Cloud in three distinct typologies:

  • A0 - Experimental Access - recommended for projects with no previous experience in HPC and Scientific Cloud; limit 15 000 CPU core.hours or vCPU.hours, maximum duration 6 months.
  • A1 - Preparatory Access - for projects with some prior experience in HPC and Scientific Cloud that need testing, benchmarking, re-factoring, others; limit 100 000 CPU core.hours or vCPU.hours, maximum duration 6 months.
  • A2 - Project Access - for projects with previous experience in HPC or Scientific Cloud; limit 3 000 000 CPU core.hours or vCPU_core.hours, maximum duration 12 months.

Applications for Project Access (A2) will be open from July 19 to September 13, 2021. The two remaining accesses, A0 and A1, will be available on a rolling basis from July 19 to April 28, 2022 or until the available resources are exhausted.

More information can be found at Call (constantly being updated) and on the RNCA website.
