Nearly 5,000 participants in Ciência 2018

During 3 days, from 2 to 4 July, the Portuguese scientific community met in Ciência 2018, the annual meeting of the Portuguese scientific community. More than 5.000 registered participants attended more than 800 communications organized in 100 sessions. PhD students presented over 700 posters.

During the 8 plenary sessions, speakers such as the President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the Prime Minister, António Costa, the Minister of the Presidency and of Administrative Modernisation, Maria Leitão Marques, the Minister of Environment, João Pedro Matos Fernandes, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Augusto Santos Silva, the members of the Parliamentary Commission for Education and Science, Presided by Alexandre Quintanilha, the European Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation, Carlos Moedas, and the Minister of Education, Culture, Science and Communication of São Tomé and Príncipe, Olinto Daio. The personalities were received by the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Manuel Heitor, the President of FCT, Paulo Ferrão, the President of Ciência Viva, Rosalia Vargas, and the Commissioner of the event, Alexandra Marques.

The meeting was organized around several scientific and technological areas and 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals for 2030, and was invited to South Africa. The future of the 9th European Framework Program for Research and Innovation, 2021-2028, was also discussed. In the space dedicated to the demonstration of the research carried out in Portugal, 80 demonstrations were on show.

The work of personalities who contributed to the development of science in Portugal was also recognized, with the Medal of Merit Ciência 2018. For the first time, the Arquivo.pt Awards were awarded to distinguish original and innovative works developed using the old web pages archived at Arquivo.pt as their sources.
