Portugal Space opens applications for two PhD Studentships

Portugal Space, the Portuguese Space Agency, is launching two Calls today, July 21, for the award of two PhD Studentships with the support of the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). These Calls are aimed at research in the areas of Space Security and Earth Observation. Applications are open until September 12.

These two Calls are part of Portugal Space's Doctoral Studentships program and aim to strengthen research, development and advanced training projects that enable sustainable, long-term growth in space-related activities in Portugal.

The Call for Studentship in the area of Space Security is aimed at students who want to pursue their PhDs in the fields of Space Meteorology, Space Debris and/or Planetary Defense and who want to study the development of tools that combine Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning for space debris management, the development of tools for the creation or analysis of space debris databases, or the study of recycling, reuse or manufacturing solutions in orbit, with the aim of reducing space debris and increasing the sustainability of space operations.

The Call in the area of Earth Observation (EO) covers R&D activities for intelligent space systems, in particular for technological development for EO satellite constellations, the use of satellite data and AI to create applications. In addition, this Call will also promote studies that combine Earth Observation and AI to create solutions that support sustainable development goals and the assessment, mitigation and adaptation to the impacts of climate change.

Portugal Space, created by Council of Ministers Resolution no. 55/2019 of March 13, was set up as a non-profit private law association. Its founders are FCT, the National Innovation Agency, the Directorate-General for National Defense Resources (DGRDN) and the Autonomous Region of the Azores, through the RAEGE Açores Association - Atlantic Network of Geodynamic and Space Stations. Portugal Space is responsible for promoting and implementing the "Portugal Space 2030" Strategy and coordinating the management of the various national programs linked to space.
