Portugal Space opens applications for two PhD Studentships

Portugal Space, the Portuguese Space Agency, launches today, July 21, two Calls for the attribution of two Studentships doctoral projects with the support of the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). These Calls are aimed at research in the areas of Space Safety and Earth Observation. Applications will be accepted until September 12.

These two Calls are part of Portugal Space's Studentships PhD program and aim to reinforce research, development and advanced training projects that enable a sustainable and long-term growth of space-related activities in Portugal.

The Call for Studentship in Space Security is addressed to students who want to pursue their PhDs in the fields of Space Weather, Space Debris and/or Planetary Defense and want to study the development of tools that combine Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning for space debris management, the development of tools for the creation or analysis of space debris databases, or the study of recycling, reuse or in-orbit manufacturing solutions with the aim of reducing space debris and increasing the sustainability of space operations.

The Call in the area of Earth Observation (EO) covers R&D activities for intelligent space systems, in particular for technology development for EO satellite constellations, use of satellite data and AI for the creation of applications. In addition, this Call will also promote studies that combine Earth Observation and AI to create solutions that support sustainable development goals and the assessment, mitigation and adaptation to climate change impacts.

Portugal Space, created by the Resolution of the Council of Ministers No. 55/2019, of March 13, was established as a private non-profit association. Its founders are the FCT, the National Agency for Innovation, the Directorate General of National Defense Resources (DGRDN) and the Autonomous Region of the Azores, through the Association RAEGE Azores - Atlantic Network of Geodynamic and Space Stations. Portugal Space is responsible for promoting and executing the "Portugal Space 2030" strategy and to articulate the management of the various national programs related to Space.
