RCTS increases capacity due to pandemic COVID-19

RCTS - Science, Technology and Society Network, which supports the teaching and research community's Internet connections, is reinforcing its response capacity to cope with the substantial increase in traffic in recent times, as a result of the pandemic crisis we are experiencing. The connection to some institutions has also been reinforced.

On March 11th the RCTS connection to GigaPIX was upgraded, a centralizing node that allows a more efficient exchange of internet traffic with several commercial operators and the world. Now it was the turn to see the RCTS connection to some institutions strengthened, such as the University of Algarve and the two universities on the islands, Madeira and Azores.

The RCTS100 project is also underway, which will further strengthen the national academic network. This is the largest RCTS funding in the last 10 years: it represents an investment of around 11.5 million euros, is scheduled for completion in September next year and aims to provide RCTS with the capacity to process large volumes of data. In addition to capacity, the network's "mesh" will also be "spread" in areas such as the country's interior north and south, to eliminate the digital divide: the asymmetry between data transmission capacities between the interior and the coast.

Also in the scope of the RCTS100 project, it is planned to improve network redundancy, multiple 100 Gbps connections to access entities, and upgrade IT equipment.
