Tiago Santos receives the Pulido Valente Science Prize
The 2013 Pulido Valente Ciência prize has been awarded to the study "Polymeric nanoparticles to control the differentiation of neural stem cells in the subventricular zone of the brain", by Tiago Santos, published in the journal ACS Nano.
The study describes the application of nanoparticles containing encapsulated retinoic acid as an innovative and effective strategy to induce the differentiation of stem cells in the brain into new neurons. The approach presents significant advantages and offers new perspectives for the treatment of brain damage and neurodegenerative disease. The project was developed at the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology, of the University of Coimbra.
The award ceremony was held on March 11, at Palácio das Laranjeiras, and Tiago Santos took part giving a short lecture on the winning study's topic.
The Pulido Valente Ciência prize was created by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) and by Fundação Francisco Pulido Valente and distinguishes publications in Biomedical Sciences by researchers under the age of 35, based at Portuguese research institutions. Awarded for the first time in 2003, the prize is granted annually, and has a value of 10 000 euros.
