Policy on Open Access to Scientific Publications marks one year
It has been a year since the Policy on Open Access to Scientific Publications came into force. Adopted by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), the Policy establishes the framework for making publications resulting from FCT-funded research available in open access, provided that the application period ended after February 7, 2025.
Throughout its first year of implementation, the Policy was the subject of dissemination and clarification actions within the scientific community, with a view to supporting its correct application. Among these initiatives, the creation of a support website stands out, which brings together guidelines for authors covered by the open access publication obligation. The perspectives of researchers and institutions on the application of the Policy were also collected and shared, contributing to a better understanding of the challenges and needs associated with its compliance.
Its implementation is part of a broader strategy to promote Open Science in Portugal, in line with European and international guidelines, such as Plan S. The application of the Policy is supported by a set of digital infrastructures and services provided by FCT, through its digital services unit FCCN, which assist the scientific community in applying these guidelines.
One year after its launch, the Policy on Open Access to Scientific Publications has established itself as the benchmark instrument for the open access publication of scientific results funded by the FCT.
In the future, the Policy will continue to frame the availability of scientific results funded by FCT, keeping pace with developments in scientific publishing practices and national and European guidelines on Open Science. Its implementation will be accompanied by ongoing support for the scientific community.
