Portugal leads the way in adopting ORCID and modernizing science
In an increasingly digital and interconnected scientific ecosystem, efficient management of information about researchers, projects, and publications has become essential. Portugal has stood out in this scenario by taking a leading position in the adoption of ORCID —a unique identifier that allows authors to be unequivocally linked to their scientific output.
Since 2013, with the support of the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), the country has invested in a solid strategy of interoperability and transparency, integrating ORCID into platforms such as CIÊNCIAVITAE and promoting its use through the PTCRIS ecosystem (whose website was revamped in 2025, featuring a renewed and more intuitive interface). This approach has reduced bureaucracy, improved data reliability, and facilitated the monitoring of national scientific activity.
With around 80% of Portuguese researchers already registered with ORCID, Portugal ranks among the most advanced countries in implementing this system, reinforcing its commitment to more open, efficient, and connected science.
