The FUTURE4PRIMA project is currently conducting a survey aimed at funding institutions, research institutions, the private sector, and civil society, asking them to identify critical challenges and potential areas for innovation and cooperation in the Mediterranean region, with an emphasis on the water-energy-food-ecosystem nexus approach. The collection of contributions ends on November 11, 2024.

FUTURE4PRIMA is funded by the Horizon Europe program and aims to contribute to the future of the Partnership for Research and Innovation (R&I) in the Mediterranean Region (PRIMA), of which Portugal is a member, represented by FCT, which will remain in force until the end of 2028.

Firstly, the FUTURE4PRIMA project is identifying research and innovation (R&I) priorities that can address the interlinked challenges of climate change, pandemics, and conflicts, which affect resources (water, soil, energy) that are already limited in the Mediterranean region.

Climate impacts, such as changing precipitation patterns and extreme weather events, together with population growth, urbanization, and economic development, place further strain on resources. Addressing these issues requires a comprehensive understanding of the region's ecosystems, cultural heritage, and socioeconomic conditions, which can be addressed through collaborative R&I initiatives.

The results of this questionnaire will provide guidance to FUTURE4PRIMA and the PRIMA initiative in identifying research and innovation priorities for the continuation of PRIMA through PRIMA 2 (2028-2035).

In addition to this survey, complementary seminars may be organized, which will be announced by the respective promoting countries, and which will constitute an additional platform for stakeholders to discuss and refine the priorities identified at the national level.
