1st edition of Science4Policy supports 18 studies for public policy

News Science4policy 2023

The results of the 1st edition of Call of science studies for public policies (Science4Policy - S4P-23), launched by the FCT - Foundation for Science and Technology and PlanAPP - Center of Competence for Planning, Policies and Foresight of the Public Administration in September 2023, were published this Tuesday, April 9.

The 18 selected studies (see the "Results" tab) fall under different thematic lines that correspond to a specific need for public policies identified by RePLAN - the Planning and Foresight Services Network of the Public Administration - within the framework of the Thematic Agendas of the Portugal 2030 Strategy.

The result of a partnership between the FCT and PlanAPP, the main objective of Call is to fund and promote scientific knowledge to support decision-making and the formulation of public policies.

In order to stimulate more integrated approaches to policy formulation and decision support, the thematic lines of Call are identified as needs by at least two areas of government, favoring cross-cutting readings and perspectives of the problem and the responses to be developed.

In addition, the selection process values collaborations with Public Administration entities and civil society partners in the context of the topics covered. In this way, the initiative stimulates the production of science for public policy in the scientific community, as well as the use of the knowledge produced for the development of public policies by the Government and the Public Administration.

The 18 winning studies are led by researchers from research units in various scientific areas and geographical locations, whose teams include public administration bodies from various government areas. Each project will culminate, within a maximum of 12 months, with the delivery of a policy brief with substantiated recommendations for the problems identified in the respective thematic lines.

More recently, on February 14, the 2nd edition of Call Science4Policy was launched. The deadline for applications was April 2 and the results should be known in July 2024.

Science4Policy is part of a set of Calls that aim to deepen synergies with other government areas for the development of R&D activities of relevance to non-academic entities ("Health+Science" and "Defense+Science" programs).
