Call Studentships at the European University Institute with funding from FCT

Applications are now open for Studentships at the European University Institute (EUI) for the academic year 2026-2027, in the fields of Law, Economics, History and Civilization, and Political and Social Sciences. The deadline for submissions is 2:00 p.m. (CET) on January 15, 2026.

Portuguese citizens, citizens of other European Union Member States, third-country nationals, stateless persons, or beneficiaries of political refugee status may apply, provided they can prove permanent and habitual residence in Portugal.

For this Call, FCT will award four PhD Studentships , with a maximum duration of four years: the first three years will be funded by FCT and the fourth year by IUE.

Since 2012, under a protocol between FCT and the Directorate-General for European Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 45 Studentships have been awarded to IUE.

Created in 1972, the European University Institute is an international institution of excellence dedicated to advanced training and research, focusing on topics of European dimension. Portugal joined the EUI in 1989 and assumed the rotating presidency in 2025.
