Call for Applications for PhD Programs Affiliated with CMU Portugal 2026
The application period for the 6th edition of the Affiliated Ph.D. Programs, funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), runs through May 12, 2026. The program aims to award up to 12 Studentships for the 2026–2027 academic year. These Studentships students to pursue their Ph.D. at a Portuguese university and include a research period at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in Pittsburgh.
The 12 Studentships cover selected areas of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) under the CMU Portugal Program: Biomedical Engineering; Computer Science; Electrical and Computer Engineering; Human-Computer Interaction Engineering and Public Policy; Language Technologies; Machine Learning; Materials Science and Engineering; Mechanical Engineering; Robotics; Social Computing; Software Engineering. For this edition, two new areas have been introduced: Cognitive Neuroscience and Neural Computing.
Studentships include full tuition coverage and a Studentship for up to four years, as well as funding for a research period of up to 12 months at CMU. Selected students will pursue their Ph.D. at a Portuguese university and will receive their degree upon completion of the program.

On April 21 at 3:00 p.m. in Lisbon (10:00 a.m. in Pittsburgh), the CMU Portugal Program will host an online information session to answer questions about this year’s competition. Registration is required to attend.
