CMU-Portugal Program

The Carnegie Mellon Portugal Program (CMU-P), launched in 2006, has the overarching mission of fostering ties between industry and academia as a driver of change with economic and social impact in the field of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT).

Phase IV of the Program, covering the period 2025–2030, aims to increase its ambition and impact and ensure greater alignment with national and European priorities, addressing the societal, economic, and technological challenges identified at the national and European levels.

Priority areas for collaboration

The program focuses on the field of Information and Communication Technology, with a particular cross-cutting emphasis on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its applications, namely:

  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Robotics
  • New frontiers in computing (including advanced computing and quantum technologies)
  • Technology-driven public policy (engineering and public policy)

Initiatives

  • Advanced training for teachers, students, and industry professionals through dual-degree doctoral programs, executive education programs, and student and faculty exchange programs;
  • Collaborative research projects, including large-scale projects and exploratory projects, involving national higher education and research institutions, CMU, and industry partners;
  • Mobility of students, faculty, and researchers, promoting extended periods of research at CMU and immersion in highly competitive scientific and technological environments;
  • Initiatives in innovation and entrepreneurship, including support tools for knowledge commercialization and acceleration, aimed at fostering the creation and growth of startups and connecting them to the business ecosystem.

This program benefits or has benefited from funding from the Recovery and Resilience Plan, being one of the measures included in investment RE-C06-i06 – Science Plus Training and contracted between FCT and the Recuperar Portugal Mission Structure.
