Applications for PhDs to teach in primary and secondary schools
The deadline for applications for the Call Extraordinary External Selection and Recruitment of Teaching Staff for Pre-School Education and Basic and Secondary Education is September 26 at 6pm. This Call, which is also open to doctoral graduates wishing to join the teaching profession, aims to attract teachers to the pedagogical zones where there are a greater number of students without classes for extended periods.
To this end, doctoral graduates who meet the scientific requirements to teach in a particular recruitment group, defined by the number of ECTS required, can apply with their own qualifications, even if they do not currently have the professional qualifications (pedagogical training) for teaching.
ECTS can be proven by means of a document from the higher education institutions awarding the degrees to be presented, which must include the ECTS of the diplomas in question. The number of ECTS required for each recruitment group is available in the annex to Decree-Law 80-A/2023.
To apply for the Call Extraordinary External you need to register on the SIGRHE platform, where the application is formalized.
Teachers who are selected under these conditions will be given a provisional contract and will have a period of four years in which to obtain a professional teaching qualification through a Master's degree in Teaching. Once they have obtained this qualification, their provisional contract will become permanent and they will join the ranks of the Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation (MECI).
A professional qualification can be obtained through in-service professionalization or by completing a master's degree in teaching. Tuition fees for the master's degree in teaching can be supported through Studentships studies financed by the MECI.
Doctoral graduates with their own qualifications can also apply for School Contracts, which take place throughout the school year (Decree-Law no. 51/2024). School contracts are temporary replacement contracts for a minimum of 30 days, but can be extended until the end of the school year. The Calls School Contracts are available on the SIGRHE platform.
Through these temporary contracts, doctoral graduates can have their professional teaching experience in higher education recognized in their salary, with a maximum salary of €2,016.85 per month for candidates with a doctorate who have been teaching for 6 years or more.
If they do not hold a professional teaching qualification, doctoral graduates placed on school contracts will attend pedagogical training at a training center run by an association of schools, in conjunction with higher education institutions, with a minimum of 100 hours.
