FCT opens 1,450 places in Call 2023 Studentships Call
Today, March 1, marks the start of the application period for Call Applications Studentships for Doctorates in all Scientific Fields 2023, from the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), which runs until 5:00 p.m. on March 31. It is expected that 1,450 Studentships will be awarded, of which 400 will be allocated to a specific application line for work plans developed in non-academic entities.
PhD Studentships are intended for candidates who are enrolled, or who meet the necessary conditions to enroll, in a course of study leading to a doctoral degree and who wish to carry out research activities leading to the award of that degree.
In addition to the general application line, in all scientific areas, for research work to be carried out in scientific and academic institutions, the Call opened a specific application line for Studentships whose work plans are partially carried out in one or more non-academic entities.
Pursuing a public policy of advanced training based on socially relevant research, in 2023 the FCT will thus strengthen institutional cooperation and the link between work plans developed in academic and non-academic environments, understood in a broad sense, which includes companies, collaborative laboratories, technology and innovation centers, and other interface centers, public administration entities, or third sector entities.
Non-academic entities, by hosting doctoral fellows, can benefit from a public policy promoting science funding, strengthening synergies with the scientific and academic environment and boosting innovation and competitiveness. To this end, the FCT has opened a call for expressions of interest for non-academic entities to host doctoral students, to which more than 200 entities have already responded, in a list that is published and constantly updated.
The FCT aims to qualify doctoral students through training that has an impact on the enhancement of the organizations involved, which are active in the areas of science, innovation, health, education, culture, and social welfare, among others. Advanced Training is an essential vector of the National Science and Technology System, contributing to the renewal of critical mass, excellence, innovation, and connection to society. Currently, the FCT has more than 7,200 Studentships in progress. In 2022, FCT support in the area of advanced training corresponded to an investment of €135 million.
