FCT Issues Call for Applications to Select National Representatives to the IASC

Polar Landscape

The Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) has issued a call for expressions of interest to select national representatives for threeworking groups of the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC): the Atmosphere Working Group, the Cryosphere Working Group, and the Terrestrial Working Group.

Applications will be accepted until 5:00 p.m. (Lisbon time) on July 9, 2026, and are open to researchers with a Ph.D. who are conducting scientific research in the Arctic in the areas covered by the respective working groups and who are affiliated with a national research or higher education institution.

This initiative aims to ensure Portuguese representation on the IASC Working Groups and to strengthen the national scientific community’s participation in international Arctic research programs.

The selected representatives will serve for a term of four years, with the possibility of a single one-time renewal for an equal period. Their duties will include participating in online meetings throughout the year and in an annual in-person meeting held during Arctic Science Summit Week; travel expenses for this meeting will be covered by the FCT.

Applications must be submitted by email, by sending a letter of motivation and a resume, both in English, to the FCT Polar Program Coordinator, Maria Germana Santos (germana.santos@fct.pt).

The evaluation will take into account the alignment of the candidates’ academic backgrounds with the objectives of the respective working groups, the relevance of the research conducted in the Arctic to the advancement of national Arctic science, and the motivation and interest demonstrated.

More information is available on the call for expressions of interest page.
