The Belmiro de Azevedo Foundation Award is an initiative resulting from a protocol between the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) and the Belmiro de Azevedo Foundation (FBA), which aims to promote the implementation of projects with obvious merit and impact at national and international level in the field of conservation, restoration and monitoring of biodiversity in Portugal.
Applications will be assessed by a jury made up of personalities, preferably with foreign affiliation, of recognized international merit in the field of biodiversity-related sciences, appointed by the FCT and the FBA.
Non-profit legal entities under private law with headquarters in Portugal, including scientific societies or non-profit scientific associations, higher education institutions and their public or private R&D institutes and units may apply. Each proposal must indicate a researcher responsible for coordinating the entity's work, who has held a doctoral degree for at least 5 years.
In each annual edition of the prize, the two foundations, in equal shares, award one or more prizes up to a maximum of €500,000 (five hundred thousand euros). Each of the prizes to be awarded is a maximum of €250,000.00 (two hundred and fifty thousand euros) and a minimum of €100,000.00 (one hundred thousand euros).
