EDCTP- European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership

The Global Health European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Joint Undertaking (GH EDCTP3 JU, 2021-2031) is a partnership between the European Union and Africa in global health.

GH EDCTP3 JU is the third EDCTP programme and is an institutionalised Article 187 partnership that builds on the success of the previous programmes, EDCTP 1 and EDCTP 2. GH EDCTP3 JU aims to contribute to the development of new or improved health technologies for the identification, treatment and prevention of neglected and poverty-related infectious diseases, including (re)emerging diseases affecting sub-Saharan Africa.

In addition, the GH EDCTP3 JU will fund activities for research capacity building in Africa, supporting researchers’ careers and strengthening national health research systems, enhancing the ability of sub-Saharan African countries to identify and respond to key infectious disease health challenges.

The general objectives of GH EDCTP3 JU are to:

  1. Reduce the socioeconomic burden of infectious diseases in sub-Saharan Africa by promoting the development and uptake of new or improved health technologies, and
  2. Increase health security in sub-Saharan Africa and globally, by strengthening the research- and innovation-based capacities for preparedness and response to control infectious diseases.

GH EDCTP3 JU has a total estimated budget of EUR 1.6 bn. The financial contributions come from the EU (EUR 0.8 billion), the EDCTP european and african country members (0.43 billion) and the contributing partners, such as philanthropies or industry (0.4 billion). Portugal was a founding member of EDCTP and is also a member of the new GH EDCTP3 JU programme, being represented by FCT and AICIB.

The priority areas of GH EDCTP3 JU are described in its Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda.
