European Consortium for Ocean Research Drilling / International Ocean Discovery Program (ECORD/IODP)

AANchOR Logo

O European Consortium for Ocean Research Drilling (ECORD) is the European consortium that establishes a European infrastructure for ocean drilling/drilling research. This management structure currently has 15 members (14 European countries and Canada) and is part of the international IODP program for the same purpose.

Drilling and borehole research is essential for ocean science as it collects material that makes it possible to study climate and environmental changes, the deep-sea biosphere or the geophysics and geodynamics of the Earth.

Participation in this consortium is fundamental to guaranteeing Portuguese scientists access to the international IODP program, the world's largest in Ocean Drilling, which allows, among other benefits, access to specific research platforms, such as the US JOIDES Resolution and Japanese Chikyu vessels equipped with permanent drilling facilities, laboratories and offshore core repositories, as well as, through ECORD's Mission-Specific Platforms (MSPs), more specific platforms depending on the type of expedition.

FCT involvement

  • Annual financial contribution, which allows the involvement of Portuguese researchers:
    • access to ships and multiple specific drilling platforms (IODP Expeditions);
    • research and use of IODP material(samples, data, outreach material);
    • in sending out proposals for new sites to be drilled;
    • participation in IODP Program panels (such as the Science Evaluation Panel);
    • access to summer schools, courses and workshops organized by ECORD/IODP;
    • research Studentships for young researchers;
    • in targeted research with IODP (ECORD Research Grants);
    • the possibility of inviting a Distinguished Lecturer.
  • Support for national delegates to attend meetings.
