The winner of the 2025 João Monjardino Award is Marco Antonio Catussi Paschoalotto, the lead author of the article “Health systems resilience: is it time to revisit resilience after COVID-19?”, published in the scientific journal Social Science & Medicine in 2023.

The study critically examines the concept of resilience in health systems in the post-COVID-19 pandemic context, proposing a reflection on the need to revisit and reformulate this concept in light of the structural, institutional, and political challenges highlighted by the global health crisis. The research was conducted as part of the work carried out at the Center for Research in Political Science (CICP) at the University of Minho, in partnership with Harvard University and the Getulio Vargas Foundation.

Marco Antonio Catussi Paschoalotto is an Assistant Professor at the School of Economics, Management, and Political Science at the University of Minho, a Tenured Researcher and Deputy Director of the Center for Political Science Research (CICP), as well as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the United Nations University – Operating Unit on Policy-Driven Electronic Governance. He holds a Ph.D. in Organizational Administration from the University of São Paulo and conducts research in the areas of public health, governance, and health policy.

In this year’s edition, the João Monjardino Award was dedicated to the theme “Public Health and Health Policies.” This award, worth 10,000 euros, stems from a memorandum of understanding signed between the Francisco Pulido Valente Foundation and the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), with the aim of stimulating research, experimental development, and innovation in the field of Biomedical and Health Sciences by recognizing the merit of scientific and technological activities carried out in this field. The date of the award ceremony for the 2025 edition of this competition will be announced in due course.
