September 21st is the International Day of Peace, which has been celebrated by UNESCO since 1981 with the aim of strengthening the ideals of peace among the people of various nations. This year, the day is dedicated to the theme "Together for peace, security and dignity for all" and will be commemorated with different activities around the world. To mark the day, the Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, has written a message in which she warns about the challenges that world peace faces today.

Irina Bokova also highlights the importance of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and science in the pursuit of world peace, noting that "We need a new comprehensive approach, to address root causes, strengthen the rule of law and foster sustainable development based on dialogue and respect. This guides UNESCO's action to build peace through education, freedom of expression, intercultural dialogue, respect for human rights and cultural diversity, and scientific cooperation."
