25 years since the creation of MCTES and 200 years of the Thalia Theater

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the creation of the Ministry of Science and Technology (MCTES). The official celebrations will take place on June 17 at the Thalia Theater, a 200-year-old monument whose anniversary will also be marked at the event.

The celebrations begin at 3:00 p.m. with the session "Iberian research and innovation initiatives," which will consist of the presentation of the program to strengthen cooperation between the La Caixa Foundation (FLC) and the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), with the MCTES.

At 5:00 p.m., the conference "Music, Science, and Art: On Vincenzo Galilei—On the 500th Anniversary of Galileo Galilei's Father" will begin, given by Professor Manuel Pedro Ferreira of Universidade Nova de Lisboa.

The program will end with an Opera Gala, curated by Filipe Pinto-Ribeiro, featuring two big names in the world of opera, Anna Samuil, Russian soprano, and Alfredo Daza, Mexican baritone. Both are soloists at the Berlin State Opera, the famous Staatsoper Unter den Linden, which has been directed by conductor Daniel Barenboim since 1992. At this gala, they will be accompanied by pianist Mathias Samuil and will perform famous arias by some of the greatest composers of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries, such as Mozart, Donizetti, Gounod, Dvorák, and Verdi.

The celebrations will be attended by the Minister of Science, Technology, and Higher Education, Manuel Heitor, and the Minister of Culture, Graça Fonseca.

In accordance with current health and public health guidelines, capacity at the Thalia Theater is limited to approximately 80 people. Therefore, participation in the event is restricted to those who have registered in advance by sending an email to: mjose@mctes.gov.pt
