3rd Edition of NASA Internships

Applications are now open for the 3rd edition of the Call for ResearchStudentships for Internships at NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration of the USA). Up to six internship Studentships will be awarded and applications can be submitted until January 21.

The program takes place under an agreement signed in 2016 between the FCT, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education (MCTES) and NASA, which allowed Portugal to join the US space agency's International Internship Program. Students of Portuguese nationality who are studying for a doctorate or master's degree in science, technology, engineering and mathematics can apply. The internship opportunities for this edition include 22 NASA projects, from which candidates can indicate the one or ones they wish to apply for.

Twelve students took part in the first two editions of the internships. One of these students, Milton Cordeiro - who took part in the first edition in 2017, while completing his PhD in Biotechnology at Universidade Nova de Lisboa - received an invitation from NASA at the end of the internship to continue his collaboration as a guest researcher at the agency. He is currently developing a method for producing biosensors in a space environment to monitor astronauts' hearts, which he started during his internship.
