FCT publishes results of the 2016 Call for PhD Studentships and Post-Doctoral fellowships

The Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia published today the results for the2016  Call for PhD and Post-Doc Scholarships. 1.200 scholarships have been awarded – 800 PhD scholarships and 400 Post-Doc scholarships –, around 30% more than at the same phase of results for the 2015 Call.

Scholarships are a subsidy given to researchers to allow the dedication to scientific and technological activities on an exclusive basis. The awarding process has several phases between application and results. Once applications are submitted and their eligibility has been verified, proposals are vetted separately by two senior researchers by panel. Whenever necessary, experts external to the panels are also invited to vet specific proposals.

5.262 applications were submitted for the 2016 Call. 4.406 of those – 2.392 PhD applications and 2.014 Post-Doc Applications – were evaluated by 464 evaluators in 39 scientific panels, with a success rate of 27%. In 2015, the success rate at the same stage was 24%.

Applicants selected for funding may set the starting date of their work plan between 1 October 2016 and 1 September 2017. Grants will be paid retroactively for work plans started between 1 October 2016 and the signature of Scholarship Contracts.

All candidates have been informed of their funding proposal and have access to comments made by the panel that justifies their classification. If the decision on awarding the scholarship is unfavourable and applicants wish to discuss their classification, they have a period of 10 working days to submit their comments to the panel.

In 2017, the call for PhD Scholarships will be opened in March. The documentation on this call will be available soon.
