University of Aveiro scientist becomes first Portuguese member of European Academy of Sciences

João Rocha, head of the Centre for Research in Ceramics and Composite Materials (CICECO), of the university of Aveiro, this month became the first Portuguese scientist to be invited to join the European Academy of Sciences (EURASC), an independent organisation bringing together some of the most distinguished scholars and engineers, holding citizenship of a European country or residing in Europe.

After an unanimous approval by the General Council of EURASC, the Portuguese chemist thus join a select membership of scientists carrying out forefront research and the development of technologies, united by a commitment to promoting both science and technology and their crucial roles in underpinning social and economic development.

“This nomination acknowledges almost 25 years of scientific research by my research team, that I am very proud to coordinate”, João Rocha declared in a statement released by the University of Aveiro.

João Rocha has over 430 publications and 10 000 citations. He is Director of the FCT-funded Associate Laboratory Centre for Research in Ceramics and Composite Materials, a reviewer for the European Research Council, sit on the National Council for Science and Technology (CNCT), and is a member of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences. He was awarded the 2004 FCT Scientific Excellence Prize.
