Within the scope of the Protocol signed between the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) and the Professor Francisco Pulido Valente Foundation, a call is now open for the João Monjardino Prize 2025, under the theme "Public Health and Health Policies: Determinants of the Evolution of Health Systems". The prize will distinguish the best published article describing the results of research carried out by a researcher affiliated with an institution within the national science and technology.

The Prize is intended to distinguish the best paper published on the topic Public Health and Health Policies: Determinants of the Evolution of Health Systems without restrictions on the year of publication, which describes the results of the research.
Only one original paper per candidate will be admitted to the Call, published, or accepted for publication with proof of acceptance in a national or international journal of the speciality in which the applicant must be the first author or co-author (if it is acknowledged in the publication as having an equal contribution to the paper as the first author).

Researchers under the age of 35 at the time of application submission, affiliated with an institution within the national scientific and technological system.

Applications must be submitted between 15 July 2025 and 30 September 2025 (5:00 PM, Lisbon time), by filling in the electronic form available here: https://concursosfct.formstack.com/forms/premiojoaomonjardino2025
The following documents must be uploaded in the application form:
• Applicant’s citizen card (Cartão de Cidadão – CC).
• Letter from the head of the research group, confirming that the research was carried out in their laboratory/institution, had his/her acknowledgement, and approves the application. The letter must also contain information about the applicant’s contribution to the work published or accepted for publication.
• Proof of acceptance for publication of the paper if it has not yet been published.
Incomplete applications or those submitted after the deadline will not be accepted.

The evaluation is carried out by the following members of the Jury:
Constantino Sakellarides (President)
Retired Full Professor at the National School of Public Health, NOVA University Lisbon. Currently serves as President of the Portuguese Association for the Promotion of Public Health and of the European Public Health Association.
Julian Perelman
Full Professor of Health Economics at ENSP NOVA, with research focused on health inequalities, healthcare financing, and economic evaluation. He is Vice-President of the Health Technology Assessment Commission.
Inês Fronteira
Associate Professor with Habilitation at ENSP NOVA, President of the Portuguese Epidemiology Association and member of the National Council of Ethics for the Life Sciences. Her research focuses on health policy and health workforce planning.
Pedro Pita Barros (on behalf of the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, IP)
Full Professor at Nova SBE, expert in Health Economics, member of the European Commission’s Expert Panel on Effective Ways of Investing in Health (EXPH), and Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Health Economics and Management. Actively involved in national and international health advisory bodies.
Nuno Miguel Rocha Cortez Dias (on behalf of the Fundação Francisco Pulido Valente)
Physician at CHULN, lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Lisbon, and director of educational programs in electrophysiology at Abbott. His clinical and research work focuses on arrhythmology.
Evaluation Criteria
• Scientific quality of the paper
• Relevance of the study and relevance of the results obtained within the topic of the prize
• Contribution of the applicant to the work published or accepted for publication.

The amount of the Prize is 10.000 EUR (ten thousand euros), paid in equal shares by both Foundations and awarded in a single instalment.
