Healthy and Productive Seas and Oceans Joint Programming Initiative - JPI Oceans

JPI Oceans logo

One of the first thematic initiatives, the Healthy and Productive Seas and Oceans Joint Programming Initiative (JPI Oceans) was created in 2011 as part of the European JPI mechanism. It is a platform for coordination and strategic integration (at a political level rather than a purely scientific one) open to all EU Member States and associated countries investing in marine and maritime research. The initiative currently includes 21 countries covering all of Europe's ocean basins.

JPI Oceans' activities include the publication of joint transnational Calls in areas of interest to the member states of this European mechanism and other joint activities such as workshops and knowledge hubs, as well as the sharing of scientific equipment.

Portugal has participated in JPI Oceans since its foundation, through the tutelage of two ministries, namely the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education (MCTES), with competences in the area of science and technology funding (through FCT) and the Ministry of Economy and the Sea (MEM) with competences in the area of oceans (through IPMA).
