Marco Paschoalotto Receives the 2025 João Monjardino Award

The award ceremony for the 2025 João Monjardino Prize will take place today, September 18, at 10:00 a.m., in Auditorium B1 on the Gualtar campus of the University of Minho, in Braga. The award, presented by the Francisco Pulido Valente Foundation (FFPV) and FCT for the 2025 edition, will be presented to Marco Paschoalotto, a professor at the School of Economics (EEG), Management, and Political Science at the University of Minho.

The opening session will feature remarks by Madalena Alves, representing the FCT presidency; Rui Pulido Valente, president of the FFPV; Luís Aguiar-Conraria, president of the EEG; and António Salgado, vice-rector for research at the University of Minho. This will be followed by a presentation of the award-winning article— “Health systems resilience: is it time to revisit resilience after Covid-19?” —by Marco Paschoalotto, published in the journal Social Science & Medicine. The study offers a reflection on the concept of resilience in health systems, taking into account the structural, institutional, and political challenges highlighted by the pandemic. The research was conducted at the Center for Political Science Research at the University of Minho, in partnership with Harvard University and the Getulio Vargas Foundation.

The ceremony’s program will also include, at 10:25 a.m., a panel discussion on the topic “The National Health Service in the Face of Crises: Lessons on Resilience, Adaptation, and the Future,” featuring André Peralta, Deputy Director-General of the Directorate-General for Health; Manuel Pizarro, City Councilor for Porto and former Minister of Health; and Margarida Tavares, former Secretary of State for Health. The discussion will focus on the current and future challenges facing the National Health Service and its ability to adapt in times of crisis.

The program also includes the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the FFPV and the Portuguese Society of Public Health, followed by the formal presentation of the award.

The João Monjardino Award, worth 10,000 euros, aims to encourage research, experimental development, and innovation in the biomedical and health sciences.
