ESFRI – European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures

TheEuropean Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures(ESFRI) contributes to a strategic approach to research infrastructure policy in Europe and facilitates multilateral initiatives that lead to better use and development of research infrastructures at European and international level.

In 2006, ESFRI published its first Roadmap for the construction and development of the next generation of pan-European research infrastructures. ThisRoadmapwas updated in 2008, 2010, 2016, 2018, and 2021 to include projects and landmarks that aim to promote European leadership.

TheESFRI Roadmap 2021included eleven new projects, for a total of 63 research infrastructures, of which 22 are projects and 41 are landmarks.

On October 8, 2024, ESFRI launched the procedure for review of its European Research Infrastructure Roadmap, with applications for new European research infrastructures being accepted until April 8, 2025.

For European applications with Portuguese participation, the respective Portuguese community may request national political support by submitting the completed national questionnaire and the most advanced version of the European application to the national ESFRI delegation by January 10, 2025.

The publication of the new ESFRI Roadmap is expected at the end of 2026.

ESFRI activities often involve the collaboration of external experts, who may be suggested by national delegations. In order to better respond to ESFRI requests for expert suggestions, FCT intends to create a "pool of experts," from which the national delegation to ESFRI, led by FCT, can suggest experts whenever requested, with ESFRI having the final decision on the choice of these experts and contacting them.

Registration for this pool of experts can be done using the respective form.
