ESFRI - European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures

The European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) contributes to a strategic approach to the definition of research infrastructure policies in Europe and facilitates multilateral initiatives that lead to better use and development of research infrastructures at European and international level.

In 2006, ESFRI published its first Roadmap for building and developing the next generation of pan-European research infrastructures. This Roadmap was updated in 2008, 2010, 2016, 2018 and 2021 to include projects and landmarks that aim to promote European leadership.

The ESFRI Roadmap 2021 included eleven new projects, for a total of 63 research infrastructures, of which 22 are projects and 41 are landmarks.

On October 8, 2024, ESFRI launched the procedure to revision of its Roadmap of European Research Infrastructuresand applications for new European research infrastructures can be submitted until April 8, 2025.

For European applications with Portuguese participation, the respective Portuguese community can request national political support by submitting the completed national questionnaire and the most advanced version of the European application to the national delegation to ESFRI by January 10, 2025 .

The new ESFRI Roadmap is expected to be published at the end of 2026.

ESFRI activities often rely on the collaboration of external experts, who may be suggested by the national delegations. In order to better respond to ESFRI's requests for suggestions for experts, FCT intends to create a "pool of experts", from which the national delegation to ESFRI, under the responsibility of FCT, will be able to suggest experts whenever requested, with ESFRI making the final decision on the choice of these experts and contacting them.

You can register for this "pool of experts" using the relevant form.
