JPI - Joint Programming Initiatives

As part of the dynamisation and deepening of the European Research Area, and following the conclusions of the December 2008 Competitiveness Council (CC) on the importance of joint programming of research in Europe in response to major societal challenges, the process of identifying themes for Joint Programming Initiatives (JPIs) has been initiated. These initiatives are primarily aimed at developing and implementing common strategic research agendas, focusing primarily on strengthening cross-border cooperation, coordination and integration of Member States' research programmes in selected key European societal areas.

The proposal of topics for JPI is a joint work between the European Commission and the Council. The GPC - High Level Group for Joint Programming, whose Portuguese representation is ensured by the FCT, follows and monitors the joint programming process.

Participation in JPIs is voluntary, and not all Member States may be involved in each specific JPI. However, it is intended that the partners involved will be able to provide the critical mass of resources needed to carry them out.
