Calls FCT's Calls Advanced Computing Project Calls seek to increase national and international competitiveness in science and technology, as well as contribute to innovation and knowledge transfer, and to the achievement of the global aspirations set out in the United Nations 2030 Agenda: Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In this context, the promotion and strengthening of the skills of scientific and technological institutions through the participation of their teams in advanced computing projects is particularly important.
The Call Projects in Advanced Computing in all scientific areas is held annually. Proposals are evaluated by two independent panels: technical suitability is assessed by individuals who manage the requested computing resources, and scientific merit is evaluated by panels of experts, predominantly affiliated with foreign institutions, who are experienced and of recognized merit and integrity, constituted by scientific domain.
Calls for the allocation of computational resources through the following types of access:
- Experimental Access (A0) – recommended for teams with no prior experience or history of using computational resources who wish to test and explore HPC, AI, and Cloud and Visualization tools. Duration: 6 months.
- Access Development (A1) – recommended for software performance testing, code optimization, scalability testing, benchmarking, refactoring. Duration: between 3 to 12 months.
- Regular Access (A2) – recommended for scientific or innovation projects whose team has consolidated previous experience. Duration: 12 months.
- Greater Access Dimension (A3) – for large research and innovation projects whose team has consolidated previous experience. Duration: 12 months.
Available computational models:
- High-Performance Computing (HPC) – enables the execution of parallel processing applications, access to GPUs, access machines with high memory capacity, among other things.
- Computing for Artificial Intelligence – This model aims to support research and development projects that use artificial intelligence tools and data analysis algorithms in the areas of Natural Language Understanding, Ethical Artificial Intelligence, or others. It can be complemented with the HPC and cloud model.
- Cloud Computing or Virtual Research Environment – allows you to run complex applications, host services such as web servers, databases, portals, create test and development environments, create virtual machines, run Linux containers, access GPUs, manage your resources flexibly, access the EGI Federated Cloud, among others.
