Open Science Policies

Open Science promotes transparency, collaboration, free access, and reuse of scientific knowledge, contributing decisively to scientific progress.

For this reason, Open Science policies have been adopted almost everywhere. Portugal is no exception. The political commitment to Open Science is made clear in instruments such as Council of Ministers Resolution No. 21/2016 of March 24, which defined the guiding principles for the implementation of a National Open Science Policy, or Decree-Law No. 63/2019 of May 16, which determines that R&D institutions must contribute to Open Science, ensuring free and open access to scientific knowledge.Decree-Law No. 63/2019 of May 16, which stipulates that R&D institutions must contribute to Open Science by ensuring free and open access to scientific knowledge and promoting engagement and interaction with society.

In the case of scientific and technological activity financed by public funds, it becomes even more important to ensure Open Science practices.

For this reason, FCT, as the funding body for the national scientific and technological system, is adopting instruments that promote the practice of Open Science within the framework of the scientific activity it funds.

Contributing to this effort is the adoption of the Open Access Policy for Scientific Publications Resulting from Research Funded by the FCT and the Policy on the Availability of Data and other Results of Scientific Research Funded by the FCT, which aim to ensure the open access publication of works resulting from FCT funding and the availability of data resulting from FCT-funded research in open access.
